Home EV charger installations have exploded over the past few years across areas like Pinner, Ealing, Uxbridge, Ruislip and Harrow as more people switch to electric vehicles. With that growth has come a wave of unqualified or poorly trained installers. Here's what you need to know before booking anyone.

Is It a Legal Requirement?

Yes. An EV charger installation is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. This means it must either be carried out by a registered competent person (such as a NAPIT or NICEIC registered electrician) or notified to your local Building Control Authority.

If an unregistered person installs your charger, you'll need to pay separately for Building Control inspection and approval. More importantly, if it's not done to standard, your home insurance could be invalidated — and the manufacturer's warranty on the charger itself may not apply.

What to Look for in an Installer

Check that the electrician is registered with NAPIT, NICEIC, or another government-approved scheme. This isn't just a badge — it means their work is regularly audited and independently backed. My NAPIT registration number is 81930, which you can verify at napit.org.uk.

Also check that the price they're quoting is genuinely all-in. Some installers quote a low labour rate but then add the charger unit, cabling, consumer unit modifications, and any extra circuits separately. The price should cover charger, all materials, installation, and NAPIT certification.

What's Included in a Proper Installation?

A full installation should include: a dedicated EV circuit from your consumer unit, all cabling run neatly to the parking location, the charge point mounted and commissioned, and the full electrical certificate issued. If your consumer unit is old or doesn't have a free way, that may need addressing first — a good electrician will tell you this upfront rather than arriving on the day and surprising you.

I install the MyEnergi Zappi as my recommended charger — it's solar-compatible, has excellent app control, and charges at up to 7.4kW (around 8x faster than a 3-pin socket). Use the EV calculator on the pricing page for an instant all-in price.

What Does It Actually Cost?

For a standard single-phase home installation in Pinner, Hemel Hempstead, Harrow, Uxbridge, Ealing or nearby — all-in prices start from £999 including the Zappi charger, all cabling, installation and full NAPIT certification. Use the calculator on the pricing page for a more specific figure based on your setup.
