Your consumer unit (fuse board) is what protects your home if something goes wrong electrically. Older boards with rewirable fuses or early MCBs simply don't offer the same level of protection as modern units — and in some cases, insurers won't cover properties with them.

A modern consumer unit with RCD protection can detect a fault and cut the power in as little as 30 milliseconds — fast enough to prevent a serious electric shock. It's one of the most cost-effective electrical upgrades you can make.

I supply and fit market-leading units from Hager, Schneider Electric and Wylex. The job is typically done within half a day, all notified to Building Control, and you get a full certificate at the end.

Common Questions

A straightforward swap typically takes around half a day. The power will need to be off for most of this — I'll work as quickly as possible and let you know exactly what to expect.
Yes — before fitting a new consumer unit I always carry out a visual inspection. If I have concerns I'll flag them and we can discuss before any work starts.
If your board has rewirable fuses, looks scorched or damaged, has no RCD protection, or doesn't have enough circuits — it's worth upgrading. If you're not sure, send me a photo and I'll tell you honestly.
