Your consumer unit (fuse board) is what protects your home if something goes wrong electrically. Older boards with rewirable fuses or early MCBs simply don't offer the same level of protection as modern units — and in some cases, insurers won't cover properties with them.

A modern consumer unit with RCD protection can detect a fault and cut the power in as little as 30 milliseconds — fast enough to prevent a serious electric shock. It's one of the most cost-effective electrical upgrades you can make.

The job is typically done within half a day, all notified to Building Control, and you get a full certificate at the end. Prices start from £500.
