Consumer Unit Upgrades in Hemel Hempstead
Consumer unit upgrades are one of the most common jobs I carry out in Hemel Hempstead. A lot of HP2 New Town housing still has a 1960s or 1970s fuse board in the kitchen or under-stairs cupboard, and HP1 Old Town properties often have mixed boards that have been added to over the years. A modern 18th Edition unit with RCBO protection is the cleanest way to bring the installation up to current standards — and it is often the first step before an EV charger or extra circuits.
Adeyfield, Bennetts End and Highfield (HP2) were built in a short window after the war. The original consumer units in those houses were typically Wylex or MEM boards with rewireable fuses or early MCBs and no RCD protection. At 60-plus years old they are well past the point where an EICR will keep passing them. I replace those with a metal-clad 18th Edition board, test every circuit, and restore power the same visit — most Hemel houses are done in a morning.
Old Town (HP1) is a different job. Georgian and Victorian properties along the High Street and around St Mary's often have the board tucked in a cellar, meter cupboard or rear lobby, and the earthing arrangement needs checking before a new unit goes in. If the main earth or bonding is not up to scratch I will tell you before we start, rather than fitting a new board onto a weak foundation.
Apsley, Boxmoor and the newer waterside builds (HP3) usually have later boards, but they are still worth upgrading if you are adding an EV charger circuit, a garden supply, or you have been told the board will not accept another RCBO. I handle Part P notification through NAPIT, so you do not need to contact Dacorum yourself. Landlords can pair the upgrade with an EICR on the same visit if a C2 on the board is holding up a tenancy.
