If you live in Hemel Hempstead and you want a charger on the driveway or in the garage, this is the practical version of what the job involves. It is written for homeowners in HP1, HP2 and HP3. The place to book is the Hemel EV charger page, or the contact form if you would rather send a photo of the board first.
Prices below are the ones already on that page. The EV chargepoint grant is up to £500 per socket, and up to 75% of the cost, until 31 March 2027. It is for renters, flat owners and landlords. It is not for someone who owns a house with a driveway. The grant guide sets that out in full. I am OZEV-approved, registration through NAPIT 81930.
What the installation involves
A standard home installation is a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit to the place the car will charge, the unit mounted and commissioned, and the certificate left with you. A standard job in Hemel starts from £999 all-in. That covers the charger, the cabling, the labour and the NAPIT certificate. The exact price depends on which charger you choose and how far the cable has to run.
I supply and fit MyEnergi Zappi, Ohme Home Pro, Ohme ePod, Hypervolt Home 3 Pro and Easee One, or a charger you already own. Zappi is the one I fit where there are solar panels. Ohme is the one I fit most often for a smart tariff. The chargers I fit work with off-peak EV tariffs, including Octopus Intelligent and British Gas EV. There is a 12-month warranty on the work.
Use the calculator on the EV charger page if you want a figure before you call. Most home installations take around half a day.
How long you should allow
Allow about half a day for a straightforward home installation. New Town houses in Adeyfield and across HP2 and HP3 often have the consumer unit in the kitchen or a utility cupboard and a short run to the garage, which is the simpler version of the job.
If the consumer unit has to be upgraded as well, that is usually half a day on its own, and I quote it with the charger so you are not booking two visits you did not expect. I will tell you which it is before any work starts.
What to check before you book
Look at where the car will park, and whether that space is off the street. A garage or a driveway makes the cable route simpler. Note where the consumer unit is. A photo of the board is enough for me to say whether the job looks straightforward.
Tell me which charger you want, or that you want a recommendation. If you are not sure, say so when you book and I will talk it through. Call 07405 629 940 or use the contact form.
When an earthing or consumer unit check is needed
I check the board, and the earthing and bonding, before I add a charger circuit. That check matters most on Old Town houses along the High Street, where the consumer unit is often older. If the main earth is not up to scratch, or the board cannot take another circuit safely, I say so before any work starts.
A consumer unit upgrade, when it is needed, starts from £500. I will not start a charger I cannot finish safely. Newer houses in Apsley and Boxmoor are often a shorter job, but the board still gets looked at before the circuit is added.
Booking the Hemel job
The Hemel EV and car charger page is where you book. It covers HP1, HP2 and HP3, including Old Town, Adeyfield, Apsley and Boxmoor. If the house is in Pinner rather than Hemel, the Pinner charger page is the one to use. The grant is up to £500 per socket for renters, flat owners and landlords, not for someone who owns a house with a driveway. The grant guide has the full rules.
